Going Bowling in Virginia

When the weather outside gets chilly, and that gloom sets over the city, there is nothing better than knocking over a few pins at the local bowling alley. There are countless alleys in the country, and quite a selection in the state of Virginia alone, but in Richmond, Virginia, the bowling scene is particularly rich. There are enough alleys to keep both serious and amateur bowlers entertained. Family-friendly, historical, or musical, Richmond has it all.

Bowl America

Started in 1958, Bowl America has expanded from its humble roots in Washington D.C. to nineteen locations, spread across Maryland, Florida, and Virginia. In Richmond, Bowl America has two locations. It is an old-fashioned and kid friendly establishment, and it offers great food and affordable prices. It’s Midlothian location offers cosmic bowling, where bowlers can knock glowing pins in the dark, with music playing all the while.

Plaza Duckpin

Duckpin bowling is slowly making a disappearance from our culture, but there are about forty duckpin alleys left in the United States, and Plaza Duckpin is one of them. Duckpin bowling is similar to tenpin bowling, but the bowling balls weight from 2 to 4 pounds, and pins are about 2/3 the size of a regular tenpin. Plaza Duckpin offers 20 lanes, and it offers great entertainment. Rock bands play live music on a stage over the center of the alley, and there is also cosmic bowling, cheap beer pitchers and affordable family fun.

Bowling can be a great activity for families to do together, or for a children’s birthday party, or simply to liven up an otherwise uneventful day. What is great about bowling attractions in Virginia is that the state has a rich history, so there are bowling alleys that could not be found elsewhere, and in such a variety.
